Vegvísir (Icelandic for "wayfinder" or "way shower") is an Icelandic magical stave intended to help the bearer find their way through rough weather or rough times. The eight Icelandic rune staves comprising the Vegvisir are believed to represent the cardinal (North, South, West, East) and inter-cardinal directions (Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast).Tradition has it that the ancient Norse people believed that wearing a Vegvisir symbol would help them find their way back home safely, and Viking ships were thought to bear the Vegvisir to ensure a successful homecoming. Some warriors tattooed this symbol on their body or even on their foreheads.
